017_FOOT BRIDGE BERLIN 2017 / BROMMY ON THE WATER

When on the spreebalkon looking at the city, one can attempt to reconstruct Berlin's
history, from the industrial memory to the Berlin wall and moving forward to today's
buildings and technology.
But then we forget the Spree, the river serving to the creation of the city that here served
as a limit.
If a bridge’s story is that of crossing the water to join another bank the new Brommy
bridge is the chapter where Berliners get close to the water.
The new Brommy bridge is moving from one functional link to become an event in
Berlin’s public space.
The bridge splits in two ways that go around the existing pillar.
The structure of each of the pathways is a central steel beam, simple and clear, with an
angle in the existing axis of the pillar. The boomerang shape is supported in three points:
in the existing pillar and on both banks.
On elevation the central beam adjusts its height to the span. On the northern span the
beam goes over the deck level. Seats and benches can be installed on one of the
pathways.
On summertime, in a near future, it will be possible to swim on the spree.
The pathways can then go down to water level. This happens by a hydraulic cylinder that
helps the articulated pillars of the bridge to slide and the deck to descend.
The deck becomes a pier over the Spree.
This one pillar is the memory of this industrial area, that is radically changing since new
buildings are being built on the site. The Brommy bridge splits in two ways that avoid the
existing pillar.

When both pathways are lowered, a river swimming pool is created between them.
A slight movement can transform the use of a bridge, giving a new value to the river.
The new Brommy bridge becomes the event of this evolving part of Berlin.
